Overwiew

316L lap style short end fittings are fittings used in place of welded flanges and require a rotating back-up flange. They are also referred to as lap joints and Vanstone flare type lap joints. A rotating back-up flange rests snugly against the rear face of the short end fitting. When bolts are added, the clamping action of the bolts presses the rotating back-up flange against the back of the 316L pipe end. The gasket surface of the 316L short end is then pressed against one gasket and the other gasket surface to provide a joint like a standard flanged joint. Sealing is accomplished by the gasket surface of the short end alone, with the flange providing only the clamping pressure on the joint.

In a piping system, the 316L lap stub end and its associated slip-on flange allow for quick disconnection of the specific section in question. 316l stub ends are installed in pairs and mated to two lap flanges. The surface of the stub has a pronounced serrated gasket surface that prevents leakage at the connection. With 316l stub ends, sections of pipe can be opened for cleaning, inspection, or quick replacement, etc., without re-welding. There are two basic types of lap joints, A.S.A. long barrel type and M.S.S. short barrel type. Under certain design criteria, such as temperature or pressure, it is not acceptable to have a joint between the 316l short end and the pipe in close proximity to the flange joint; in these applications, the A.S.A. type is used.
